Tortoise Watch is a website that installs like an app — nothing from the App Store, nothing for your IT department to approve. These steps are for iPhone with Safari. Android is at the bottom, and it's shorter.
Part one
Put it on your home screen
This has to happen in Safari — it's the only browser Apple lets install to the home screen.
-
Open Safari and go to the address above
Type it or paste it. You'll see the Tortoise Watch sign-in screen. Don't sign in yet — install first, so your sign-in lives in the app, not in a browser tab.
-
Tap the Share button
The square with the arrow pointing up, in the bar at the bottom of Safari (on iPad, top right).
-
Choose Add to Home Screen
Scroll down the share sheet a little if you don't see it right away — it's in the list of actions, with a plus-in-a-square icon.
-
Tap Add
Keep the name as is. The shell mark lands on your home screen like any other app. You can close Safari — you won't need it again.
Part two
Sign in — from the icon, not the browser
The installed app keeps its own sign-in, separate from Safari. So do this inside the app you just installed.
-
Open Tortoise Watch from your home screen
Full screen, no browser bar. That's how you know you're in the installed app and not a Safari tab.
-
Tap Continue with Google
A Google sign-in sheet slides up over the app. Pick your account the way you would anywhere else.
-
Land on your dashboard
The sheet closes and returns you to Tortoise Watch, signed in. You'll stay signed in — this is a once-per-phone step, not a daily one.
If sign-in doesn't bring you back
Occasionally the Google sheet finishes but the screen behind it doesn't catch up. Close the app fully — swipe up and flick it away — then open it again from the home screen. Nine times out of ten you're already signed in.
Still stuck? Email gregdyche@creighton.edu with what you saw. You will not be the only one, and you'll be helping the next person.
Part three
Stand your first watch
A watch is a block of time you stand on purpose — Chapter Five of the workbook, now in your pocket. The app deals you one project at a time. You commit, or you pass with an honest reason. That's the whole practice.
-
Add a goal
Go to Goals and name one thing this season is about. Your Eastward Gaze works fine here. One is enough to start.
-
Add a handful of projects
Go to Projects and enter three or more real ones — things you've been circling, not a wish list. Give each a time estimate. Ugly drafts are fine; you can edit anything later.
-
Tap Stand a watch
Nothing to fill in. The app reads the clock and tells you what kind of hours these are — Sharp, Steady, or Open minded. Read it and tap through. If the hour is lying to you, there's a link to say so.
-
Bearing
Pick the goal this watch is headed toward. There's no all of it option, on purpose — the boat doesn't leave harbor without a direction. Projects that don't sit under a goal show up under Unassigned.
-
Work the deck
One card at a time. If this is the one, tap Commit to this and the rest of the deck disappears — that's the point. If it isn't, tap Not this one and pick the reason that's actually true. There's no skip. The reason is the work.
-
If you keep passing, answer the question
Pass enough times in a row and the deck stops and asks you to choose: commit to one of the ones you passed, or end the watch. Both are honest answers. Picking one on purpose is the practice.
Then go do the thing. Committing isn't the finish line — it's the starting gun. Put the phone down and stand the watch you just committed to.
On Android
Two taps in Chrome
-
Open the address in Chrome
Same address: app.tortoiseplanner.com
-
Menu (⋮) → Add to Home screen, then Install
Then pick up at Part two — everything from there is identical.
You now have what the workbook promised: a tool that guards your ordinary day. Stand one watch tomorrow. Then the day after.
Some is better than none. Now is better than later.
The same race, the same way, tomorrow.
